Don was called to the Bar in 1974 and has practiced in many legal sectors including commercial and residential real estate, corporate law, commercial and bank financing, franchising, and wills and estates.

He is a community leader involved in numerous community organizations. He was elected to the City of Kitchener Council in 1979 and the Waterloo Regional Council in 1981 to 1989.

He served as Chair of the Finance Committee of both the City of Kitchener and the Region of Waterloo during most of his terms on council.
